Smack-dab on top of one of the greatest ethnic, religious, and political fault lines in the world, live the Azerbaijani people. 40 million in number, this Turkic Muslim ethnic group is spread across the country of Azerbaijan and neighboring Iran. Azerbaijanis are community-oriented people who find their identity in their families and villages. Many Azerbaijanis would consider themselves Muslims before anything else. Their strong feelings about being Muslim may come from a long-standing sense of competition and conflict with people groups that call themselves Christian - like Russians, Armenians, and Georgians. They are proud to offer hospitality, careful to maintain their honor, and hate to do anything that might bring shame on anyone close to them.
